FOOD
We believe in feeding variety. We don't believe in a strictly pelleted diet. Our birds are offered a mix of grains and seeds and peppers that's made for us at Des Moines Feed, a separate pellet, and human foods as well. We feed fresh fruits and vegetables daily....usually mixed fruits like apple, orange, banana, and grapes, plus a dark green veg like bok choy and a dark orange one like sweet potato. Frozen mixed vegetables are a good base. Birds also can have breads and cooked pasta...my amazons love poppyseed dressing on their rotini.
Some birds are affected by dyes in pellets, so we use only natural ones. Some birds are affected by wheat...we remove pellets from their diet.
Birdie bread recipes are common, and we like to use them. We avoid any very high-fat oils, such as coconut.
I like to hang fresh fruit on skewers, instead of putting it in feeders. More gets eaten and less goes on the floor...birds get some activity getting at it, and it's a more natural way of eating.
